Planning a Snowy, Ski Lodge Wedding

Unfortunately, I am not cool, coordinated, or well-traveled enough to participate in winter sports. I think tubing would be right up my alley. Even without these experiences, I still feel confident in designing a ski lodge wedding. It takes aspects from my mountain and warm ‘n’ cozy weddings while adding in some fun 80s and 90s colors and fun.

Setting

A ski lodge wedding mandates one little thing- a ski lodge, resort, or cabins. Otherwise, it is just a winter wedding (which is perfectly fine but not the same). Ideally, I would have a ski lodge wedding in the winter or when there’s snow on the ground in order to take advantage of the fun amenities. How fun would it be to have your family and bridal party come up a bit early to ski, snowboard, and lounge by the fire?

Décor

Whichever ski resort you choose will dictate your ceremony and reception space. The quintessential ski lodge would have high ceilings with wood, beams, and floor to ceiling windows with views of the slopes. I envision a roaring fireplace and cozy spaces for relaxing and lounging.

I would fill this space with greenery, ambient lighting, and nods to winter sports and the mountains. Skis can be used for signage or even signed for a guest book. Customized ski lift tickets can be hung for a seating chart. Table numbers or names could be on postcards from varying ski resorts or mountain cutouts. Blankets can be spread out among the ceremony and reception spaces for guests or hung from the chairs at the sweetheart table.

Colors

What I think is so fun about this design is the juxtaposition between earth tones and neon colors. I love bright snow gear- especially 80s and 90s ski jackets. Those jackets are actually the whole inspiration behind this ski lodge wedding. The neon colors work because of the neutrality of the rest of the space.

What The Main Two Wear

For a groom, I like a suit that is high contrast against the snow- black, charcoal, dark brown, or navy. For a bride, I love white, ivory or cream. I feel it fits so nicely with the neutral, earth tones and also works with a fun ski accessory. Would you don an 80s ski jacket over your wedding outfit and take off down the mountain?

While a bit cheesy, a pin I saw pretty often was a pair of bride and groom toboggans. (Side note- when I say toboggan do you think of a hat or a sled?)

What the Wedding Party Wears

For the wedding party, I would stick to neutral earth tones like brown, beige, or green. They could accessorize with faux fur wraps, fun beanies or gloves, and snow gear depending on the point in the day. It could even be a nice gift to present your bridal party with neon hats, gloves, or jackets.

Food

After a weekend of winter sports- or to fuel up before hitting the slopes- nothing sounds better than warm, comfort food and hot chocolate or coffee. People have different definitions of comfort food, so pick whatever you and your spouse-to-be like the best. A late night hot chocolate and coffee bar would be the perfect way to end the reception.

A wedding at a ski resort would be such a unique destination wedding. And how cool would it be to ski down a mountain instead of using a getaway car?
